2. Early Origins

In the beginning...
At the end of World War I a Dr. W.H.L. Johnstone, together with other local sporting characters, launched a Sports Union. After much fund raising a ground was bought in Watery Lane, Newent and by 1920 Football, Cricket, Tennis and Hockey were being played on it.

Under the guidance of Dr. Johnstone (a former Irish international) the Hockey and Cricket sections decided thay wanted a better playing surface. After further fundraising (and the use of horse and carts!) a "proper" pitch was laid. At the time it was the best in the Gloucestershire and many county level games were played on it - It remained in use until 1968 when the school was built.

In 1923 the Hockey Club was formed and, with expertise and support from Dr. Jonstone, Newent soon had a useful side.

At the outbreak of World War II the Hockey Club was disbanded. Then, on August 1st 1945, a meeting was held to discuss if the club should be re-formed. It was decided unaminously that it should and fixtures were arranged for the following season...

Ladies also played in the 1920's but we have no evidence of it continuing for long.
